Poodles!

It is true that we have many kitschy items like fruits with faces, clowns, and lots of animal figurines in our shop.  My favorite of all the kitschy items is anything depicting a poodle!  In honor of National Standard Poodle Day on January 6, 2025, I thought it was appropriate to write about poodles.

My Aunt Phyllis also lived with them along with her 5, 234 toy poodles, I exaggerate…. more like 20 poodles.  Although they greeted you when you arrived it did feel like there was way more than there was.   Aunt Phyllis was a dog groomer and poodle breeder by trade and quite an eccentric woman. She spent her spare time painting ceramics and showing her poodles at dog shows.   I spent a lot of time with her and got to participate in all her hobbies (I failed at the ceramic painting but excelled at the poodling).  I even went to work with her a few times where I got to tend to the front shop and dust all the rhinestone dog collars.  She also had me help with her “poodle fashion shows” at the local retirement homes.  Imagine a little toy poodle in a vintage clown costume…. so cute and the residents just loved the show!

My Gram and Aunt Shirley had their own little poodles that they carried around.  The rest of our family did not share the same fondness for the poodle pack.  In fact, they began “poodling” each other.  “Poodling” is the act of sending some sort of poodle item to a family member.  Upon opening the item, there was a customary “Oh NO, it’s a poodle! Why? Yuck!”.  I got to play once and then they benched me because I loved the poodle they sent me and refused to send it to another family member.  They should see my collection now, and I did not even need them to help me, LOL!    So, it has some to my realization that the poodle is my spirit animal.  They symbolize adaptability, intuition, and harmony.  They exude uniqueness and encourage me to embrace my own uniqueness.  A poodle can also be a sign of good luck and positive energy!  Hopefully, all of you will see a poodle soon and smile!
